Library Awards

Distinguished Service Award

This award may be conferred upon a group of people, or an individual, for noteworthy achievement as evidenced by substantial activities and exceptional service to the library community.  The New York recipients or recipient shall have influence and reputation beyond the local community. This award shall be given at the discretion of the NYSALB Board.

This award shall be based upon such activities or accomplishments as follows:

  • Constructive accomplishments toward the advancement of library service and the development of sound library policies.
  • Creative and effective work in interpreting the library to the community/state and in bringing its problems before the eyes of decision-making leaders in the community/state.
  • Involvement and effectiveness in library-related matters beyond the call of duty.
  • Wisdom and sound judgment in applying to library procedure ideas which have brought increased service and efficiency.
  • Persistent devotion to the ideals of good library leadership.

Criteria for NY Library Service Award

  • Improving library services through sustained or recent contributions
  • Promoting the use of the library and its services to the community
  • Initiating a significant library service or activity
  • Supporting the principles of intellectual freedom
  • Advancing interlibrary cooperation to expand resources/services
  • Actively participating in one or more regional, state and national library advocacy organizations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Living a life that inspires others
  • Exemplary service to the New York Library Community
  • A model of genuine care, ethics and professionalism in service to the library community
  • Dedication
  • Significant contributions in the library field
